Reliable, Precise Drug and Alcohol Testing Services Since 2019

Substance abuse in the workplace is a serious issue that can lead to accidents, decreased productivity, and higher rates of absenteeism. This is especially true in industries where employees operate heavy machinery or work in potentially dangerous environments. Testing personnel for drug and alcohol abuse is also relevant for any business working with the general public, such as hospitals, restaurants and schools. In all sectors, ensuring that workers are free from the impairing effects of drugs and alcohol is not just good practice -it’s a critical part of maintaining day-to-day operations with a drug-free workforce.

what we do

Workplace Solutions

Hair follicle drug tests identify drugs or drug metabolites in a sample of hair. A drug metabolite is a substance that is generated in the body as a drug is being broken down and eliminated. Once a drug is consumed, it enters the bloodstream and travels throughout the body, including into hair follicles. As the hair grows, the drug and its metabolites become trapped in the hair shaft, providing a record of drug use. This method offers a long detection window of up to 90 days, making it a highly effective tool for identifying long-term patterns of substance use. It’s also difficult to adulterate or tamper with, ensuring reliable and accurate results for your workplace safety program.

At Arbutus Work Solutions, choose from any of the following drug and alcohol testing services:

  • Point-of-care urine drug screens (Quick Test)
  • Lab-based urine drug screens (confirmation of presumptive positives)
  • Lab-based oral fluid drug screens
  • Alcohol tests through urine or breathalyzer

Arbutus Work Solutions provides certified lab tests (and we have a Medical Review Officer onsite in Kamloops, BC). The point-of-care test results are available within five minutes of the sample being collected. With lab-based testing, the results are available within 2 days.

You may choose to implement a program that includes both Point-of-care testing (Quick Test) and Breath Alcohol Testing, as it keeps to a minimum the number of employees who are off the job while waiting for a lab-based drug screen result.

All samples that are sent to the lab will be reviewed by Arbutus’ Medical Review Officer, Dr. Rob Baker, onsite in the Kamloops lab. This is to ensure there is never a chance of a false positive result, due to such factors as a legitimate prescription medication.

To meet the diverse needs of industries in BC, Arbutus offers various testing methods, each with unique advantages depending on the specific needs of your business. Let’s take a closer look at the most common tests used by employers today:

Urine Drug Testing
Urine drug testing is the most common method of detecting drug use in the workplace. It is widely used in pre-employment screening, random drug testing, and post-accident testing because it is highly effective at identifying recent drug use. Urine testing can detect a wide range of substances, including marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and more.

For businesses across Canada, urinalysis provides a quick and reliable way to screen employees for drugs and ensure compliance with workplace policies. Because urine drug tests can detect drugs within a few days of use, it is ideal for identifying recent substance use that could impact an employee’s job performance.

Saliva Drug Testing
Saliva drug testing is another popular option for employers looking for a non-invasive and quick method to detect recent drug use. Saliva tests can identify substances used within a shorter window, hours to days.

Blood Alcohol and Drug Testing
PEth Testing- Blood Spot Testing – testing alcohol levels through the blood.

Hair Drug Testing
Hair drug testing offers a unique advantage over other methods by providing a longer detection window. Unlike urine or saliva tests., hair follicle drug tests can go back 3-6 months

Point of Care Testing (POCT)
Arbutus Work Solutions offers Point-of-care testing for fast, reliable drug and alcohol screening directly at your workplace. This method allows immediate results, minimizing downtime and helping you make quick decisions regarding workplace safety. POCT is ideal for post-incident testing, random checks, or pre-employment screenings where timely results are crucial.

Oral Fluid Quick Testing
We offer fast and reliable oral fluid testing for drug and alcohol detection. This non-invasive method provides accurate results and is ideal for post-incident testing, reasonable suspicion, and routine workplace screenings. With rapid detection of recent drug or alcohol use, oral fluid testing ensures your workplace remains compliant, safe and drug free.

Breath Alcohol Testing (Breathalyzer)
Arbutus Work Solutions offers professional breath alcohol testing to quickly and accurately detect alcohol levels in employees. This non-invasive testing method is ideal for ensuring compliance in safety-sensitive roles, post-incident situations, and routine workplace screenings. With immediate results, breath alcohol testing helps maintain a safe and alcohol-free work environment.

A pre-employment test is conducted for a new hire to confirm their fitness for a specific role. In contrast, a pre-access test is used to ensure all workers entering a specific worksite or project are compliant with that site’s particular safety regulations.

We prioritize a quick turnaround. For most common testing methods, results are typically available within 24 hours, allowing you to make prompt and informed decisions.

In the event of a non-negative result, a Medical Review Officer (MRO) will confidentially review the findings. If a positive result is confirmed, Arbutus will work with your company to provide the necessary support and steps, such as a return-to-duty program.

We are a mobile outreach service, bringing our full suite of confidential testing and occupational health services directly to your worksite. Our goal is to provide maximum convenience with minimal downtime for your business.

Our team has over 20 years of professional experience in delivering reliable, compliant, and confidential testing and health services across various industries. We are dedicated to helping you achieve and maintain a safe and productive workplace.
